(2019) Advanced DSP for communications at deep submicron nodes

Júlio César R. F. De Oliveira, PhD

Continuous demand for high capacity keep is pressuring accelareted growth of transmission rates at communications systems. However, not only reducing the cost/bit relation, but, in the same degree of significancy the power/bit relation. To achieve this goal, optical communications sytems migrate from OOK (on-off key) to coherent systems, maximizing the diversity of dimensions to encode information at light pulses, increasing dramatically the spectral efficiency. Beyond that, advanced techniques at microelectronics development flow, associated with mandatory need for low power, make deep submicron geometries a must for solutions targeting Datacentes and future 5G fronthaul. In this talk, the evolution of optical communications systems and stablishment of a deep submicron design flow for ultra high speed transmission rates, resulting in low power ASICs, will be discussed.
